A
Jedi can perform many maneuvers that can not be
performed by any other. One example would be the
ability to jump higher. Here are some more examples.
- In
ESB, after Luke is forced into the carbon freezing
chamber, he quickly leaps straight up into the
air and grabs a hold of several tubing and pipes
probably at least 20 feet above the bottom of
the pit.
- In
TPM, After being knocked down several levels
in the palace generator section of the Queen's
palace, Obi-Wan leaps up what looks like at
least thirty feet to a higher level. And not
only that, he leaps so high, he lands on his
feet on the catwalk above.
- Secondly,
in TPM, after Obi-Wan is knocked into the pit
and grabs a hold of that small stump. He propels
himself upward at least 20 feet into the air
over Darth Maul while doing a flip.
- Other
instances could be: Anakin's ability to podrace
and Qui-Gon snatching Jar Jar's tongue in Anakin's
home.
- And
lastly, when Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon notice that
their battle with the battle droids is not going
to be resolved anytime soon, they quickly bolt
to the right (your right) and run at an extremely
fast speed.
The Star Wars RPG offers
insight into other Jedi powers. Among the more
interesting ones:
- Concentration
- allows the Jedi to concentrate hard and focus
on a task at hand, giving him more ability to
accomplish it.
- Magnify
Senses - allows a Jedi to "feel"
what may be happening in another place almost
anywhere. As the Force is in everything throughout
the galaxy, so may a Jedi powers extend just
that far.
- Transfer
Force - somewhat like how Obi-Wan brings
Luke back to consciousness in ANH, but on a
larger scale. Allows the Jedi to transfer his
personal life force into someone else.
- Hibernation
Trance / Emptiness - allows the Jedi
to go into meditation, and when he comes out,
he will be much stronger in his abilities. Seen
in "Heir to the Empire".
StarWars.Com tells us of a few
interesting abilities that Oppo Rancisis and Yaddle
have:
Rancisis is a master of Malacia,
a Jedi technique that induces a powerful dizziness
and nausea in enemies. It is completely incapacitating
like a hammer blow, but does not cause any lasting
physical damage. He has taught the technique at
the Jedi Temple for over two decades, but only
a few other Jedi have come close to mastering
the difficult discipline.
With centuries of training behind
her, Yaddle is skilled at all Jedi techniques
and is one of few Jedi entrusted with the dangerous
knowledge of Morichro - a forbidden Jedi art that
rapidly slows the body functions of other beings,
easily resulting in death.
Moving Items/People
A Jedi has the ability to move
practically any object using the force. Some examples
would be: Yoda moving Luke's ship in ESB, Luke
moving his lightsaber to himself while in the
Wampa cave. Another interesting note is the Force
movement power done by the Jedi is always applied
differently; this can be analyzed by noting two
different scenarios in The Phantom Menace.
#1 On the Federation Battleship,
just after Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon escape the gas
and are battling battle droids. Obi-Wan uses his
Force ability to knock down three battle droids
as they approach him. The droids separate into
small pieces before they hit the ground, so it
is obvious that the force impact on them was great
and caused them to split apart.
#2 During the point where Qui-Gon
and Obi-Wan rescue the Queen from battle droids.
After disarming his lightsaber, Qui-Gon uses the
force to propel two battle droids so hard that
they are flung into the wall behind them before
being destroyed.
These two scenarios present
different ways a Jedi can use his force power
to move objects. In scenario #1 Obi-Wan's force
is quick and hard against the droids. So it can
be said that he used a large but quick force on
them. In scenario #2 Qui-Gon's force was not as
strong as Obi-Wan's, but he applies it for a longer
amount of time causing the droids to fly farther
back then Obi-Wan's, but stay intact until hitting
the wall behind them.
Also, Luke in Return of the
Jedi levitates C3-P0 through the air to simulate
his god-like status.
The Jedi Mind Trick
We all know the Jedi mind trick,
used by Obi-Wan on the stormtroopers in ANH, by
Luke on Bib Fortuna in ROTJ and by Qui-Gon on
Boss Nass in TPM.
Jedi mind tricks do not work on everyone. It is
apparent that some races of creatures are immune
to the mind tricks and that they only work on
the weak-minded.
"The Force can have a strong influence on
the weak-minded."
- Ben Kenobi, A New Hope
In TPM, when Qui-Gon tries to use a mind trick
on Watto, it does not work.
"I'm a toydarian, mind tricks don't work
on me, only money!"
- Watto, TPM
And in ROTJ, when Luke tries to sway Jabba into
letting Han and Chewie go, Jabba refuses.
"Your mind tricks will not work on me, boy."
- Jabba the Hutt, ROTJ
Either the particular race of Hutts is resistant
to mind tricks, or Jabba is not weak-minded and
can not be swayed with mind tricks. According
to the Star Wars CCG, Jabba has high Force ability.
And in the novelization of ROTJ, Jabba comments
"I am unaffected by your human thought pattern."
So both seem to be correct.
Force in a Lifespan
When we are strong with the
Force, we can live for an exceptionally long time.
This is proven in the following quotes.
Master Yoda, you can't die."
- Luke
"Ohhh, strong am I with the force, but not
that strong." - Yoda
"Obi-Wan Kenobi! Surely
he must be dead by now. - Grand Moff Tarkin
"Don't underestimate the Force. - Darth Vader
Another example of the Force's
ability to prolong life force is shown in how
old people are. Look on the Jedi Council. Ki-Adi-Mundi,
Oppo Rancisis, Yaddle and Yoda are good examples
of how ancient and venerable Jedi can be. Granted,
this may be a function of their species and not
their Force powers, but it would explain a lot.
One thing that gets a LOT of
attention with the life-force abilities of the
Force is vanishing. Why is it that Yoda and Obi-Wan
disappear when they die, but Anakin and Qui-Gon
do not?. . . Hopefully, we will find out in Episode
III.
